Shower Gel Manufacturer: How to Brief Your First Order

HE Manufacturing staff working beside a liquid product filling line

A shower gel manufacturer needs more than a fragrance reference and a bottle size to quote a product you can launch. The intended user, texture, pump, sales market and claims all change the brief. A clear specification lets you compare samples and quotations on the same basis.

This guide covers shower gel for retail, spa and hospitality programmes. It focuses on the product brief; our liquid soap sourcing guide covers hand-wash supplier selection. HE Manufacturing's minimum order starts at 5,000 units. Typical production lead time is 3 to 4 weeks after formula and artwork approval. Development, testing, component procurement and freight need their own allowances; confirm the schedule and minimum for each SKU before ordering.

What a shower gel manufacturer needs in the formula brief

Start with where the product will be used and what the customer expects from it. A hotel dispenser needs dependable dispensing and a broad fragrance appeal. A retail range may prioritise a particular texture, fragrance identity or ingredient position. Give the manufacturer a reference product and explain which qualities you want to retain or change.

Specify the cleansing format. A transparent shower gel, a pearlescent wash and a creamy body cleanser are different development briefs. Ask the formulator to propose a surfactant system against your performance and cost targets, rather than choosing a system from a fashionable ingredient list.

Set measurable acceptance criteria for appearance, fragrance, pH and viscosity. Viscosity should include the measurement method and temperature, so the approved sample and production batch can be compared. Our body wash manufacturing page describes the related formats available for a brief.

Packaging decisions to make before sample approval

A formula sample in a laboratory bottle does not prove that your final pack will work. Test the product in the intended bottle, closure and dispenser. Check that a pump delivers a useful dose, a flip cap closes cleanly, and the product can be emptied without excessive residue.

For a refill pouch, agree how it will be opened, poured and resealed. For a wall dispenser, establish whether the hotel will replace a sealed cartridge or refill a reservoir. The formula, pack and operating procedure need to be reviewed together.

Ask for compatibility and transport checks appropriate to the pack and destination. Record the final material, fill volume, closure specification and decoration method in the approved specification. Changing a pump or bottle after approval can require further checks. The broader body care range helps buyers plan adjacent products with compatible packaging.

Ask your shower gel manufacturer to separate production from development

An existing formula may shorten the development stage, but it still needs to be checked against your pack, claims and destination. A modified fragrance or colour can change the work needed. A new formulation requires its own development and testing schedule.

Request a quotation that separates the formula, packaging, decoration, testing and delivery assumptions. Confirm whether the minimum applies per formula, fragrance, size or artwork version. Five thousand units split across several variants is a different production brief from one SKU of the same total volume.

HE Manufacturing's minimum order starts at 5,000 units. Typical production lead time is 3 to 4 weeks after formula and artwork approval. Development, testing, component procurement and freight need their own allowances; confirm the schedule and minimum for each SKU before ordering.

For a customer-owned formula, agree the transfer documents, ingredient specifications and approval responsibilities through contract manufacturing. Formula ownership and exclusivity belong in the agreement; the terms OEM and ODM alone do not settle them.

Evidence to request with the sample

Ask what stability, packaging compatibility and microbiological evidence supports the proposed product and which additional work your version requires. Request a finished-product specification and the records that will accompany batch release. Our quality page sets out HE's published quality information and certificate documents.

Claims should be part of the first brief. A cleansing product and a product carrying medicinal or antibacterial claims may need different assessments. Malaysia's NPRA cosmetic claims guidance explains why the claim and intended use matter. Have the proposed wording checked for each destination before approving artwork.

A shower gel brief you can copy

  • Customer and channel: retail, hotel, spa or distributor.
  • Destination markets and proposed product claims.
  • Formula route: existing base, modified base, custom development or transfer.
  • Reference product, texture and fragrance direction, with required exclusions.
  • Bottle or dispenser drawings, material, closure and fill size.
  • Quantity per SKU, target cost basis and required delivery date.
  • Tests, release documents and approval responsibilities.

Send this with your reference samples through our project enquiry page. The first useful response should identify missing decisions and a route to samples, rather than promise a delivery date before the pack is known.

Frequently asked questions

Is shower gel the same product as body wash?

The names overlap in everyday use. Buyers often use shower gel for a gel-textured cleanser and body wash for a broader range of cleansing textures. Specify the appearance, cleansing performance, fragrance and pack you need. A product name alone is too vague for a manufacturer to price or reproduce consistently.

What is the minimum order for private label shower gel?

HE's minimum starts at 5,000 units, with the final requirement confirmed for the formula and pack. Ask whether that minimum applies per fragrance, bottle size and artwork version. Component suppliers can have separate minimums, so a multi-variant launch needs a written quantity breakdown before the order is agreed.

How long does shower gel production take?

HE's typical production lead time is 3 to 4 weeks after formula and artwork approval. This is the manufacturing window. Allow separately for development, testing, sourcing packaging and freight. Ask for a schedule showing which approvals and components must be complete before the production window can begin.

Can I use one formula in a bottle and a hotel dispenser?

It may be possible, but both formats need assessment. The same gel can behave differently through two dispensing systems, and refill handling changes how the product is used. Give the manufacturer both pack specifications at the start and agree the compatibility, dispensing and microbiological checks for the intended programme.

Do I own a custom shower gel formula?

Ownership depends on your agreement with the manufacturer. Ask what is included in the development fee, whether the formula is exclusive, and what documents can be transferred if you change factories. Record those rights before development begins. Calling a project custom, OEM or ODM does not by itself establish ownership.
