RSPO Mass Balance vs Segregated: Choosing the Right Palm Sourcing Model

RSPO Certification Is a Family of Models, Not One Standard
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certifies palm oil supply chains under several different sourcing models, and the two most relevant for personal care buyers are Mass Balance and Segregated. Both carry RSPO logo eligibility, but they make meaningfully different claims about where the palm-derived material in a finished product actually came from. Understanding the difference matters if sustainability claims on packaging need to hold up to scrutiny.
How Mass Balance Works
Under Mass Balance, certified sustainable palm oil is mixed with conventional, non-certified palm oil at various points in the supply chain, tracked administratively rather than physically. A supplier purchasing a defined volume of certified palm oil can sell an equivalent volume of product as RSPO Mass Balance certified, even though the physical palm oil molecules in a given batch are not guaranteed to be exclusively from certified plantations. This model exists because it is significantly more scalable and affordable, which is part of why it drives more total certified volume through the global supply chain than segregated models do.
How Segregated Sourcing Works
Segregated certification keeps certified sustainable palm oil physically separate from conventional palm oil at every stage, from plantation to mill to refinery to finished ingredient. A product carrying an RSPO Segregated claim can trace its palm-derived content back to certified sources with far more physical certainty than Mass Balance allows. That traceability comes at a real cost premium and often a longer sourcing lead time, since segregated supply chains require dedicated handling infrastructure that not every supplier maintains.
Which Model Actually Fits a Brand's Claims
Neither model is universally better, they answer different questions. A brand primarily trying to support the broader shift toward certified sustainable palm production, without making a strict traceability claim on packaging, is well served by Mass Balance. A brand making a specific, verifiable sourcing claim, particularly for markets or retailers with stricter substantiation requirements, needs Segregated sourcing to back that claim up. Using Mass Balance-sourced material while implying Segregated-level traceability on packaging is the kind of gap that creates real greenwashing risk.
How We Handle Palm Sourcing
As an RSPO-certified manufacturer based in Malaysia, one of the largest palm-producing countries in the world, we work with both sourcing models depending on what a project actually requires, and we tell buyers plainly which one applies to their formula. If sustainable sourcing is part of your brand's story, our Sustainability page covers the rest of how we approach it, including our zero liquid discharge wastewater program.
