Choosing a contract manufacturer is one of the most critical decisions for a beauty or personal care brand. A mistake here can lead to shipping delays, contaminated batches, or compliance recalls that can destroy your brand's reputation overnight.
When auditing a potential manufacturing partner, watch out for these critical red flags:
1. Vague or Non-Documented Traceability
A reputable GMP-compliant manufacturer should have complete batch record books. They must be able to trace every ingredient in a finished bottle back to the exact supplier lot number. If they cannot quickly show you sample batch records or explain their recall procedure, walk away.
2. Refusal to Show Cleanroom and Lab Facilities
Some sourcing agents pretend to be direct factories but are actually middle-men. If a manufacturer is hesitant to host an on-site audit or refuses to show you their mixing tanks, quality control lab, and filling cleanrooms, they are likely outsourcing your production to an unvetted facility.
3. Lack of Third-Party GMP or Halal Certifications
Certification is not just a badge; it is proof of third-party audits. If a manufacturer claims to follow GMP practices but does not hold an active ISO 22716 or national GMP certificate, they are not bound by quality-control standards. Always ask to see their certificates and verify the registry status directly with the issuing body.
