Compostable vs Recyclable Packaging: Which Claim Actually Holds Up

Compostable vs Recyclable Packaging: Which Claim Actually Holds Up cover image

When design teams present 'sustainable packaging' options, they usually offer two distinct routes: compostable packaging (like PLA corn-starch plastics) or recyclable packaging (like PCR bottles). For cosmetics, choosing the wrong one can lead to greenwashing accusations. Here is how they compare in the real world.

The Reality of Compostable Packaging

Compostable plastics (like PLA) are designed to break down into organic matter under specific microbial conditions. However, there is a catch:

  • Most will not degrade in a standard backyard compost pile or in the ocean. They require industrial composting facilities (high heat and moisture) to break down.
  • If a consumer throws a compostable bottle into a standard plastic recycling bin, it contaminates the recycling stream, causing the entire batch of recycled plastic to be rejected.
  • Compostable plastics have lower barrier properties, meaning water-based lotions can dry out or lose their fragrance faster than in traditional plastic.

The Case for Recyclable PCR Plastic

PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastics, like PET or HDPE, are made from recycled plastic waste. This is the preferred model for most retail brands because:

  • It utilizes existing recycling infrastructure, meaning consumers know exactly how to dispose of it.
  • It keeps plastic in a circular economy, preventing virgin oil extraction.
  • It provides excellent barrier protection, maintaining formula stability and shelf life for up to 30 months.

For B2B brands, we recommend prioritizing PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic over compostable bioplastics, as it offers a more practical, circular pathway with today's recycling infrastructure.
